Larry Johnson was born and raised in Lakeview, a small logging town in southeastern Oregon. From an early age, Larry hunted and fished with his father, a logger, who taught him to enjoy the many moods and magic of nature's settings. His mother allowed him to "color outside the lines" and displayed his early art on the walls of their home. During Larry's early years he experienced the high mountain forests and the vast sagebrush deserts. During his university years he experienced the coastal rivers and the scenes of the Pacific Northwest. Those encounters are what make his artwork popular today. His painting experience spans over 50 years of personal experiences and from areas that he has enjoyed during his travels.

After finishing his formal training at the University of Oregon School of Architecture, he went on to study Architectural Illustration and Industrial Illustration at the Los Angles Art Center College of Design, known as the L. A. Art Center. Over the years he has continued his studies with nationally known artists either in workshop settings or in personal one-on-one sessions. Now he teaches classes across the United States.

From 1965 to1983 Larry gained the reputation as one of the nation's top wildlife artists. He was represented by over 20 galleries nation-wide; published numerous times in sporting magazines - including magazine covers - and was the featured artist in numerous regional and national art shows. He's won "Best of Show" eight times in national shows including ones in Chicago, Kansas City, Seattle and Denver.
