Kids Classes

Children’s Drawing taught by Theresa Otteson
TUESDAYS, January 26 – March 2, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Tuition: $65 (6 weeks)
Ages 8 +
This class will explore the basic concepts of drawing including body proportions and movement by making flip books, proportions of the face as you draw the right and WRONG way, and visual texture using dragons and knights! Register early to save a place in this popular class.
Theresa Otteson has a BFA from the University of Utah.  She has taught at the Peterson Art Center, taught Workshops for Young Authors Conferences in Germany, and has won many awards for her artwork including Best of Show at the Bountiful/Davis Art Center.

YogaArts for Ages 6-12 taught by Connie Day
TUESDAYS, January 26 – February 23, 4:15 - 5:00 PM
Tuition: $25 (5 weeks) or $7 drop in
Is your child inundated with a busy schedule full of school, activities, family, etc? Allow them unwind in this fun-filled yoga class designed to teach them how to reduce stress at a young age. They will learn techniques of breathing, yoga postures that are animals, and dabble in creative art to create their own yoga poses.  They will take home a piece of art each week! Have your child bring their own yoga mat to the first day of class. Space is limited.
Connie Day, 500 HR Registered Yoga Teacher, began her yogic journey in 2002 in SLC as a stress relief from her corporate job and active lifestyle.  She noticed immediate benefits to the mind, body, and spirit.  In 2006 she moved to NYC where she completed 500 HR (Yoga Alliance) training with Jean Koerner and Alan Finger in the ISHTA style (Integrated Science of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda).  With gratitude to her teachers, she now shares the abundance of yoga through teaching classes to adults, children, special needs, and at risk youth.  Her classes bring attention to breath, movement, and alignment; deepening the internal journey to freedom.

Mastering Color  taught by Sarah Bigelow Maynard
WEDNESDAYS, January 27– March 3, 4:00 - 4:45 Pm
Tuition: $65 + $15 Material Fee (6 weeks)
ages 5 +
Learn to bring an ordinary piece of paper to life by exploring different color media and the art of applying it to paper.  This highly qualified artist will cover a variety of techniques with the use of tempera gouache, pastels and oil pastels, just to name a few.  The instructor will refer to the style and color application of various master artists throughout the course. This class will open students’ eyes to the possibilities of color!
Sarah Bigelow recently graduated with a BFA in painting and drawing from Utah State University where she had the opportunity to attend a study abroad program in Germany.  In her short career as an artist, she has exhibited her work extensively across Utah.  Sarah has a gifted artist, most notably through her amazing ability to use color in her work.

Watercolor for Kids  taught by Jane Joy
THURSDAYS, January 28 – March 4, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Tuition: $65 + $15 materials fee (6 weeks)
Ages 5 +
Taught by one of BDAC’s finest teachers, students will learn the basics of watercolor or build on the skills they already have.  A variety of techniques will be explored as this fine artist leads students in the discovery of this classic art form.
Jane Joy is an art specialist for Davis County Youth in Custody and has worked with troubled youth for over 15 years. She studied art under Rosalee Duncan, Oregon artist and judge for Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and University of California. Jane is the chairman and founder of The Joy Foundation; a non-profit organization that brings youth and adult communities of all kinds together through the arts.

Sculpture for Youth taught by Mike Call
SATURDAYS, January 23 – ongoing, 11:30 AM - 1:00 Pm
Tuition: $100 (8 weeks) Supplies not included
AGES 10-18
Students will sculpt a life sized portrait in clay, try plaster casting, and create a small animal figurine. Those students who participate in the Scouting program will be able to meet the requirements for a Sculpture Merit Badge. Students can register any time. Mike Call has a BFA in sculpture from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art and has won many awards over the last 10 years including First Place Walter Hancock Prize from the National Sculpture Society.  His work is well known and can be found in several permanent collections.

Landscape Oil Painting taught by Diane Turner
TUESDAYS, January 26 – February 23, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Tuition: $70 (5 weeks)
This class is designed for advanced artists who would like to hone their painting skills with this excellent teacher.  Register early to ensure a space in this popular class.  Please bring a reference to the first class from which to paint.
Diane Turner enjoys statewide recognition as an outstanding artist and teacher.  Working with oil, she paints landscapes that have earned acclaim and many awards.  Diane has studied with LeConte Stewart and Alvin Gittins at the University of Utah.

Watercolor for the Beginner to Advanced Painter
taught by Diana Gardiner
WEDNESDAYS, January 27 – March 3, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Tuition: $100 (6 weeks)
This class will focus on painting methods in watercolor.  There will be emphasis on techniques as well as careful attention to composition.  The objective is to develop an individual approach to the watercolor medium by using desired techniques and personal photographs as subject matter.  Supplies not included and will be discussed during first class.
Diana Gardiner graduated from the University of Utah with a masters in drawing and painting.  She has had over twenty years of experience teaching drawing and painting as adjunct professor in the college of Fine Arts and currently teaches as adjunct professor in the college of Architecture and Planning at the University of Utah.

Tuition: $75 (6 weeks) or $15 drop in
Back by popular demand, this open forum of drawing from life will give artists an opportunity to work alongside their peers.  Models will be provided and there is no formal instruction. Serious artists only.   Students must be 18 years old in order to register for this class.

Head Painting in Oil taught by Chris Thornock
THURSDAYS, January 28 – March 4, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Tuition: $75 + $25 model fee (6 weeks)
This class will help artists of all levels develop strong observation, drawing and painting skills, focusing on the human figure, specifically the head.  Students should expect to complete one or two head paintings over the six week course.  Topics that will be covered include preparing painting supports, drawing and block in, under-painting, and finishing a work.  In class discussion and practice of traditional painting techniques including composition, value and color.  A list of materials will be available.  Please come prepared with all materials to first class.  Drawing experience not necessary but is preferred.
Christopher Thornock received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and his Masters at B Y U where he taught as an adjunct professor  leading classes in drawing, figure drawing, painting, figure painting, watercolor to name a few. He is currently a full-time studio artist and his work is represented at several galleries. Thornock’s work focuses on the traditional subjects of figure, still life and landscape.

Sculpture for Adults taught by Mike Call

Open to beginners through advanced students who would like to work with the instructor to develop a personalized program to meet individual needs.  Beginning students who prefer to be guided will be working on 18” - 30” figures with an emphasis placed on anatomy, proportion, gesture, and drapery. Instructor will be available for consulting and critiquing for advanced students. Optional directions of study include: portraits, figures, anatomy studies, casting and mold making, and drapery. Tuition: $105 (8 hour workshop)
Create your own mailer, brochure, or poster using Photoshop and/or Indesign. Learn the design process from creation of a document to sending a file to an online or local printer.  Computers are provided for use in class (limited laptops available) or bring your own laptop.  Students will leave this class with at least one design that is press-ready.  Need basic working knowledge of Microsoft Windows.

Art & Design in Photoshop CS4
Wednesdays and Fridays

Tuition: $135 (10 hour workshop)
Whether you are creating images for the web, for print or for your own personal use, this class will teach you some basic principles of design and how to incorporate these into your own Photoshop documents.  We will simplify effects, filters, adjustments and layers so you can master various type effects, replicate famous artist styles or design your own poster or sign.  And this is just the beginning.  Cost of class includes book.  Computers are provided for use in class (limited laptops available) or bring your own laptop. Need basic working knowledge of Microsoft Windows.  

Photo Manipulation in Photoshop CS4

Tuition: $95 (6 hour workshop)
Learn to alter photographs in multiple ways.  Get rid of red eye, fix color contrast, work with levels and histograms, use the healing brush, clone tool, adjustment layers and filters. Learn to bring out the best in your photographs using Photoshop.  Computers are provided for use in class (limited laptops available) or bring your own laptop. Need basic working knowledge of Microsoft Windows. Basic knowledge of Photoshop is helpful. 

Joy FoundationThe Joy Foundation
Through the arts, the primary goal of The Joy Foundation is to build self-worth and confidence in the hearts of the youth.  Currently, The Joy Foundation holds a yearly Chalk Art Festival on Bountiful’s Historic Main Street called ‘Magic on the Sidewalk’, Open Mic Night every Saturday evening, plus numerous film, music and computer art programs for the youth. Shey Rauch is a hands-on instructor with more than 20 years of design/art combined with 12 years of computer instruction experience.  With a BA degree from Iowa State University in graphic design, Shey is currently conducting workshops at SLCC and The Joy Foundation in conjunction with BDAC. She has worked with numerous corporations as art director or designer including: BMC Software, Elite Agency, and Dunn and Bradstreet.
