Annual Meeting and
Unveiling of the Don and Joleen Willey Family Gallery
Sign
On March 28, 2008 Bountiful/Davis Art Center held the 2008 Annual Meeting. We said special thanks to departing trustees: John Cushing, Stan Elmer and Jerry Thompson and Marsha Pilgeram; confirm continuing trustees; and confirmed the officers of BDAC, namely Aida Mattingley, Chair; Jean Madsen, Vice-Chair; Michal Onyon, Secretary; and Julie Faucett, Treasurer.
The Chair, Aida Mattingley and Director, Emma J. Dugal presented the Foundation Awards in the Arts. These awards will be as follows:
Foundation: Don and Joleen Willey Family
In 1997 when BDAC moved from the Willey Honda property to its current location, Don Willey made a pledge of $50,000 of support to BDAC that would be paid over a 10 year period. That pledge has now been fulfilled and BDAC would like to honor the Willey family by naming a gallery after them. There will be an unveiling of the Don and Joleen Willey Family Gallery Sign.
Corporate:
Zions Bank
Zions Bank has been a longtime supporter of Bountiful/Davis
Art Center. They have made consistent financial
contributions to the Center to support the Exhibitions
and Gift Shop programs. They have shown that they are
dedicated to supporting the arts and community programming.
Service Organization: Utah Office of Museum
Services
BDAC has been the recipient of several grants from OMS
that have made it possible to purchase computers, printers,
software, a projector and laptop, other technological
equipment and to overhaul BDAC’s website.
This support has been invaluable in bringing BDAC up
to date technologically speaking, and allowing us to
carry out the programs and operations of the Art Center
in a more efficient and timely manner. BDAC also
received a grant recently from OMS allowing us to collaborate
with other organizations in South Davis County to produce
a marketing brochure. The organization that was
formed with these groups is called: South Davis History,
Art and Culture Consortium. It includes BDAC,
Joy Foundation, West Bountiful Arts Council and Historic
Preservation Commission, Lamplight Art Gallery, Bountiful
Historical Preservation – Museum of History and
Archives and the Hogan Cabin in Woods Cross.
Media Award: Davis County Clipper
The Davis County Clipper has consistently reported activities and developments of Bountiful/Davis Art Center bringing more awareness to the community about what BDAC has to offer. Particular thanks go to Rolf Koecher, Editor; Jennifer Wardell, Reporter; Ron Brown, Photographer and Courtney Fuller, Advertising.
Summerfest:
Lloyd Miller and Katherine St. John
Lloyd Miller and Katherine St. John have been involved in Summerfest for most of its 20 years. Katherine, as the Artistic Director and Lloyd as the Music Director have provided hours of time, ideas, and hard work towards the success of the festival. They are both dedicated to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage particularly in folkdance and music through their non-profit organization called Eastern Arts. They have advanced degrees in eastern languages (Persian), Middle Eastern Studies and Dance Pedagogy. Both have taught at BYU and other universities and schools. Lloyd and Katherine have significantly contributed to the cultural scene not only of Summerfest but the entire Wasatch Front. Additionally, Katherine is known as the “Voice of Summerfest” as she brings her knowledge and warm personality to announcing the performances at the festival. Lloyd coordinates the popular “WorldJam” at Summerfest wherein all the musicians band together to do a rousing rendition of “When the Saints Come Marching In”.
Individuals Who Have Made Significant Contributions:
Arley G. Curtz, the former Director of BDAC,
and Emma Dugal the current Director of BDAC
Arley
elevated the visibility of the Art Center during his
14 years as Director. This was a period of tremendous
growth for BDAC and much of it was due to Arley’s
able management. He was instrumental in BDAC making
the move to its current location, working closely with
Tom Hardy, City Manager, John Cushing, Mayor of Bountiful
and Don Willey of Willey Honda. Arley left a legacy
of growth and commitment to excellence that we can build
upon for the future. Arley has a Masters of Museum Practices
from the University of Michigan. He has worked
as an arts administrator in Utah, Oregon, Wisconsin
and Tennesee.
Betty Jo Hixson
Betty Jo has always been involved in the community,
promoting the arts. She coordinated the Utah Woodcarvers
group who met at BDAC. She volunteers extensively at
the Golden Years Center providing training in the arts
to hundreds of people. She has volunteered her
time and talents to accomplish whatever task was needed
to ensure success. She has been a Board member of BDAC
for many years. Betty Jo serves on the Education
Committee of the Art Center and helps each month with
Family Encounters and other educational activities.
She worked in Davis County School District for many
years and continues to volunteer teaching children.
She has also helped with Summerfest, being the liaison
between the artists’ booths and the festival.
We have received numerous comments about how much they
appreciate her as do we!
Maxine Shreve
Community-minded, award-winning Maxine has been a
tireless force for positive change since she has been
involved with BDAC. She was instrumental in coordinating
the move of BDAC to the current location as far as the
cultural arts groups who meet at the Center were concerned.
Maxine has always championed this cause and worked diligently
to ensure that the cultural arts groups had a place
to meet within the Art Center. She has coordinated
their schedules, updated information about their officers
and activities and contact information. She has also
scheduled Gallery Sitters at the Art Center on Mondays
and Saturdays and all during Summerfest each year. Maxine
has taken on every challenge that affects BDAC including
the RAP tax campaign. She has been instrumental
in coordinating the Photos and Phrases Exhibit (a collaboration
between the Utah Photo Club and the Rhyme and Reason
Chapter of the Utah State Poetry Society) and she coordinates
the entries on the BDAC Poetry Wall. She puts the interest
of the Art Center first and foremost. Her extensive
career in community involvement extends to the Utah
State Poetry Society, League of Utah Writers and she
serves as a Trustee on the BDAC Board. This involvement
along with other things too lengthy to list here, have
helped make BDAC what it is today.
