IOV: International Organization of Folk Art

We are pleased to announce the FIRST IOV WORLD YOUTH CONGRESS, which will convene in August, 2008 in Bountiful, Utah, USA.  This congress will provide IOV youth members and their colleagues the opportunity to meet for the first time to discuss common interests, goals and projects aimed at protecting and preserving our intangible cultural heritage in accordance with the mandate of the UNESCO General Assembly.  The Congress will be hosted in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary of Bountiful/Davis Summerfest International, in Bountiful, Utah, a short distance from Salt Lake City.  Bountiful/Davis Summerfest International is a program of Bountiful/Davis Art Center.

The title of the Congress is: “Living Traditions – Safeguarding our Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

Approximately 70 young professionals whose careers and interests are related to traditional arts and culture will be participating.  Many of those coming to the Congress, in particular established academicians, will make presentations in areas related to UNESCO’s work in the area of preservation of cultural heritage, particularly as it relates to the UNESCO Conventions on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In fact, one presenter, Dr. Mila Santova of Bulgaria, was instrumental as Chair of the Bulgarian UNESCO Delegation in developing the cultural heritage preservation programs UNESCO adopted in the Convention.

There will be several rich, cultural events associated with the Congress to name a few:

Master Tea Ceremony at the Frank Lloyd Wright home in Bountiful, Utah
Greek Cultural Performance at the Greek Orthodox Church
Master Chef from Azabaijan will do a demonstration of a centuries old recipe
