Ages 12+

Instructor: Jo Munro

This illustration course will focus on the Art Nouveau movement (Art Nouveau, the ornamental style of art that flourished between about 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States). In addition to studying this movement, we will recreate our own version of an Art Nouveau image. We will also learn the basics of illustration from a basic understanding of the human head, how to draw using line weights and value variety. We will also learn about decorative and ornamental elements, the basics of a quality composition, and the use of an emphasis in said composition. It will be a very fun and rewarding time!

How did you hear about this class?
  • -Sketchbook or pad. 9x12 is preferred, if you can only find 8 x 10 that is fine.  IF you can get a hold of a "TONED PAPER" skectchbook with gray or brown paper, I highly recommend that.

-pencil, (shading pencils like an H or a B is good, but if you can't find them, just a regular pencil will do), and eraser (kneaded or pink is fine)

    -Ruler

-prismacolor colored pencils. (or any brand you can find will be ok)

-Drawing pen (any kind will do, from Micron, to Prismacolor, to a nice pen from walmart)

-REFERENCES!  please bring at least 5 pictures of things you would like to add to your illustrative, art nouveau design.  Like faces, flowers, and art nouveau patterns found online (look at the work of Alphonse Mucha for inspiration), especially retrieve images of BORDERS and CORNER ELEMENTS
