Jan 11th-Elsa Schiaparelli Bloom Portraits
Children will love the rebellious nature of protagonist Elsa in the book, Bloom: A Story of Fashion Designer Elsa Schiaparelli. Art teachers will love how Elsa was inspired by artists Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and Raoul Duffy. The book also celebrates beauty and the importance of fashion in today’s culture. This lesson is an exploration of texture and color. Children learn how to draw a face using proportions and how to use a limited color palette for their collage. Children will have the opportunity to step into Elsa’s imagination and create a whimsical portrait surrounded by flowers, leaves and gem stones.
Jan 18th-Horace Pippen Imagination Self Portrait
Inspired by the work of the self taught artist Horace Pippen, students will delve into their imagination and draw themselves in their dream space. They will imagine the studio and art pace of their dreams and draw them self painting or doing their favorite things in their own space and they color it with watercolor.
Jan 25-Cezanne Tonal Portrait
Similar to Cézanne’s still life paintings and landscapes, his portraits explored different perspectives as he was trying to find his own style as a painter. Cézanne’s moody portraits were inspired by those closest to him: his wife, servants, and friends. Cézanne favored a portrait style with a heavy emphasis on black in an approach he called couillarde. Often he would paint the same subject multiple times. Using only 3 colors: black, white and a color for the background, children will learn how to mix tints and shades to create a expressive portrait in the style of Cézanne
Feb 1-Bisa Butler Self Portrait
This lesson was inspired by the rich, vibrant, quilted portraits of contemporary artist Bisa Butler. This lesson features a unique art technique with stunning results. Rather than sewing, students will create a reverse-painted acetate portrait to lay on top of a textured, torn painted paper collage. Students will focus on contour lines and both analogous and complementary color schemes as they draw, paint and assemble their portrait. By tracing, they will also be able to identify accurate proportions for the face.
All materials are provided.
