About
Join us for a creative, fun, and meaningful evening as you design a necklace with amulets for a loved one! This hands-on workshop is inspired by our current exhibition, “Strings: A Chance to Say Goodbye” by Xi Zhang, whose work explores the emotional complexity of witnessing his grandmother’s severe memory loss in her final years. Zhang uses symbolic imagery, such as bells, to represent both memory and absence.
Using a variety of materials —cotton cord, special paper that transforms into plastic when heated, permanent markers, colored pencils, glitter, and bracelet-making techniques— you will create a necklace, bracelet, or other “string” adorned with small charms made by you. The drawings you create will shrink with heat, turning into amulets that represent memories, favorite objects, or symbols of someone special to you or your loved one. There’s no limit to your creativity—you can make as many amulets as you want!
