189 Feathers: Fracture, Endurance, and The Life that Emerged

Madison Bradford Stephens

Exhibition Run Dates:

04.10 – 05.08

Collecting feathers is a way for me to mark moments, relationships, and shifts in my life. These seemingly small and easily overlooked natural elements serve as records of memory and connection, whether found by me or gifted by others.

Using watercolor, the feathers are rendered in an organized, scientific illustration style and often include handwritten narration that appears factual but instead shares the personal stories and experiences tied to the feathers. This contrast allows the imagery to feel both scientific and intimate.

Some pieces include embroidered backgrounds that quietly support the imagery, while others use stitching as a visible structural element. In several of the central works, embroidery and framing structures hold fractured sections together or allow broken pieces to remain suspended, reflecting moments of rupture, repair, and endurance. Installed in a large gallery-style arrangement, the collection follows a personal arc of change: works on the left reflect a period that appears stable, the center reveals disruption and loss, and the right speaks to rebuilding and support. Together, these feathers function as markers of time, carrying memory, resilience, and the quiet work of healing.
