ARTIST STATEMENT

In my series Strings, I explore the final stages of my grandmother’s life through theatrical scenes and emotionally charged imagery. Having been raised by her, I witnessed her quiet, unconditional love—an everyday grace that later became shadowed by memory loss and disorientation.

As her recognition of me faded, I became a stranger to someone I had once called home. In response, I turned to painting as a means of imagining her inner monologue—one that could no longer be spoken aloud. These works attempt to breach the transparent walls that formed between us, translating silence into color, gesture, and space.

My broader practice centers on how consciousness and emotion alter our perception of reality. Drawing from contemporary psychological theory, I depict fictionalized environments where internal states manifest as physical landscapes—confusing the line between the subjective and the objective. Using a blend of expressionist and abstract aesthetics, I construct visual spaces that reflect the internal logic of my subjects’ minds: their fears, memories, and longings.

Across these works, melancholia often surfaces as both subject and atmosphere. Figures drift through dreamlike terrains—part psychological, part mythic—where personal turmoil merges with universal uncertainty. My painterly language draws from both Chinese ink traditions and Western abstraction, layering translucent washes and visceral mark-making to capture the complexity of emotional experience. In Strings and beyond, painting becomes a place where remembrance, empathy, and psychological inquiry meet.
