FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING

MAIN GALLERY

OPENING RECEPTION OCTOBER 4, 6 - 8 PM

Figuratively Speaking compels us to broaden our understanding of figurative art, celebrating the power of diverse perspectives and the transformative potential of artistic expression. Through the artistic journeys of Andrew Alba, Fidalis Buehler, and Richard Taylor, this exhibition invites us to question, reflect upon, and actively engage with the narrative of the figure itself. It is a poignant exploration of identity, politics, and emotional expression, serving as a reminder of the unlimited creative possibilities that still exist within the realm of abstract figurative art.

The thought-provoking works of Andrew Alba, Fidalis Buehler, and Richard Taylor, this exhibition takes us on an introspective journey, illuminating the rich tapestry of the human experience through the exploration of form and figure.

Andrew Alba, a self-taught artist and descendant of Mexican migrant workers, channels the power of thick, gestural oil paint and repurposed everyday materials to convey profound messages. Alba's nontraditional background infuses his work with a distinctive perspective on contemporary politics and society. His paintings, drawings, and sculptural artworks evoke emotional responses, urging viewers to challenge preconceived notions and explore the multifaceted layers of our shared human experience. Through bold strokes and inventive use of materials, Alba invites us to reevaluate our perceptions and embark on a thought-provoking journey of self-discovery.

Fidalis Buehler draws upon his Euro-American/Pacific Island heritage, skillfully weaving together the intricate complexities of his bi-racial upbringing. Guided by introspection and a deep connection to his cultural roots, Buehler's art traverses the realms of American culture and South Pacific traditions. His works serve as self-portraits, balancing levity and earnest devotion, and inviting viewers to explore the conflicting realities that shape our collective identities. Buehler's visual narratives, a ritualistic performance of playful conjuring, effortlessly reassemble personal histories and invent mythologies that brim with fear, anxiety, dreams, revelations, magic, and mysticism.

Richard Taylor, with a background in physics and materials, combines his scientific training with a reverence for historical practice. His artistic exploration centers around non-figurative abstraction, inspired the physical principles of form. Taylor's works exhibit a sensitivity for analytical form and conceptualism honed through his scientific endeavors. His art challenges traditional understandings of reality and invites viewers to perceive color and form beyond emotional and cultural contexts. Taylor's creations are a testament to the profound interconnectedness between science and art. "Figuratively Speaking" transcends conventional boundaries, encouraging us to rethink our preconceptions and embrace the limitless possibilities of artistic expression.
