Class Description

Presented by: Esmeralda Torres and the Lopez Aquino Family of Chiapas, Mexico, and Utah. This 1 ½ hour workshop is focused on the Zoque-Maya chocolate-making tradition. This session offers a cultural immersion and a space to reflect on ancestral knowledge and earth-sustaining practices. The workshop will also examine parallels within Utah's diverse communities, exploring how generational wisdom is honored through the preservation of ancestral recipes and traditional food preparation methods. Workshop Components: ● Presentation & Discussion: ○ The origin and cultural significance of chocolate. ○ Connections between this tradition, Utah cacao history, and families in Utah. ● Practical Workshop (Hands-on): ○ Experience the basic, traditional chocolate-making process using Mesoamerican and adapted tools and utensils. ● Tasting: ○ Sample traditional chocolate beverages and a variety of chocolate chip flavors. Traditional Chocolate Making Steps. The process showcases authentic techniques: 1. Roasting the cacao beans (demonstrated via video). 2. Separating the husks. 3. Grind the cacao beans 4. Mix the cacao/ chocolate paste with optional ingredients, including cinnamon and sweetener. 5. Molding and drying the chocolate bars.

Cancellation Policy

Registration fees are to be paid before the beginning of each class. A spot in a class is not guaranteed until full tuition and fees are paid. All classes have a minimum and maximum enrollment and Bountiful Davis Art Center reserves the right to cancel classes that do not meet the minimum number of students required. Every effort is made to notify those registered of cancellations. Fees for classes canceled by the Art Center will be fully refunded.
