Class Description

Sgraffito: the process of on-laying colored clay (engobe) to a piece of pottery and carving a design through the engobe layer. Mishima: the process of carving a piece of pottery with a design and inlaying engobes or glaze into the carved design. Sgraffito and Mishima Week I Students will learn about: design choices, carving methods, measurement, and repeating pattern placement for Sgraffito and Mishima. The class will work on two practice tiles, one for each technique and any pieces students bring to the class. Provided materials include: Two leather-hard tiles, practice tiles, a book of patterns, tracing paper, colored slips, brushes, and carving tools. Students should bring: any desired pattern or design and leather-hard pottery they want to work on. Sgraffito and Mishima Week II Students will learn: transferring designs onto colored engobe-coated tiles and carving their designs into the tile, The class will carve or incise a design into another tile and inlay design with engobe. The class will learn two Sgraffito and three Mishima methods. Provided materials include: patterns, tracing paper, carving tools, finishing tools. Students should bring: prepped leather hard tiles from the previous class. Sgraffito and Mishima Week III Students will learn: glazing methods such as masking specifically for pieces decorated with Sgraffito and Mishima as well as how to inlay color into a bisqued design with glaze. Provided materials include: glazes and tools. Students should bring: bisqued work from the previous classes. Teacher contact: riverstoneannie@protonmail.com

Cancellation Policy

Registration fees are to be paid before the beginning of each class. A spot in a class is not guaranteed until full tuition and fees are paid. All classes have a minimum and maximum enrollment and Bountiful Davis Art Center reserves the right to cancel classes that do not meet the minimum number of students required. Every effort is made to notify those registered of cancellations. Fees for classes canceled by the Art Center will be fully refunded. Cancellation/Refund Terms for classes: Classes cancelled by the art center: 100% refund Student cancels before first class: $10 fee (Please e-mail kaye@bdac.org for refund, less $10 fee) Student cancels after beginning of first class: No refund
