Class Description
May 26 Playful Panda This seated black and white panda is full of painting and printmaking surprises for your first graders. From scraping paint to stamping with toilet paper tubes, this panda offers lots of fun options. In this lesson, students will not only learn about printmaking, but will also use line to create texture on their pandas. This lesson also features an extra fun step; giving your panda something to hold. May 27 Chinese Dragon The Chinese dragon is considered to be the ultimate symbol of good fortune. In Chinese culture, it is believed to possess noble qualities and magical abilities. The Chinese people believed the dragon would grant them fertile lands and wealth. Students will make a large drawing of a dragon and then use paint to color it. May 28 Koi Fish After tracing over their drawing with black permanent marker, students will use pan watercolors to explore different watercolor techniques, such as wet on dry and wet on wet to give their koi fish its unmistakable, vibrant color. They will even practice creating value. As a final touch, students can sprinkle salt in the koi’s watery surroundings to add a little bit of texture May 29 Beckoning Cat This cute Maneki-neko, which translates to “beckoning cat,” is sure to bring your students a bunch of fun. Based on the iconic Japanese cat figurines, this lesson gives students the chance to create their own patterns and even lucky charms while also featuring a paper folding technique that allows the cat’s paw to move back and forth in a beckoning motion, just like a real Maneki-neko. Add some gold metallic paint as a finishing touch to make this project really shine.
