March 7 Winslow Homer Chalk Collage
This lesson combines American artist Winslow Homer's famous seascapes with the science of oceans, clouds, and weather patterns. Students will use chalk pastel to create an atmospheric backdrop and collage their drawing of a Clipper Ship onto it
March 14- Maud Lewis Lighthouse
Maud Lewis was born in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1903 and loved to paint scenes depicting the Maritime lifestyle. Born with juvenile arthritis, Maud’s hands were crippled and in order to paint, had to steady her hand with the other. This didn’t stop her as she used every available surface in her small home to paint. As a result, her paintings are bright and colorful. That’s what makes her paintings some of the best-known and loved folk art in Canada. Students will mimic her techniques with acrylic paint on paper and then collage a lighthouse on top.
March 21-Impressionist Waterscape
Monet loved painting outside (Plein Air) and was fascinated by how light affects color. Although famous for his series of paintings of haystacks and lily pads, Monet painted many waterscapes. This lesson uses tempera paint on regular drawing paper and my favorite painting technique: double-loading.
