At the heart of BDAC’s new exhibitions opening August 16th, lies an exploration of relationships—those we cultivate with ourselves, with each other, and with the world around us. Each artist delves into these connections, offering unique insights into how we navigate our inner landscapes, our interactions with others, and our place woven in the earth’s broader ecosystem.
Relationships with Ourselves: Ryan Moffett’s work in the exhibition Experience...Process...Discover invites deep reflection on the journey of self-discovery. Rooted in personal experience, Moffett’s sculptures explore the complexities of human emotion and identity. His art embodies the search for meaning as we grapple with life’s questions and the tension between clarity and uncertainty. Moffett’s introspective approach reminds us that understanding ourselves is a dynamic and ongoing process, shaped by our inner worlds and our interactions with the environment.
Relationships with Others: The interplay between individuality and collective identity is a key theme explored by Adam Thomas and Terrel VanLeeuwen. Their exhibitions examine how we define ourselves within society and the external forces that shape our perceptions and relationships.
Adam Thomas’s ME/WE installation reflects on the tension between self-expression and societal belonging, prompting us to consider how our interactions within communities shape our identities. Complementing this, Terrel VanLeeuwen’s In Search of Truth delves into the impact of misinformation on our sense of self and connections with others. Through his Flower Series, he urges viewers to seek authenticity in a world where truth is often elusive. Together, their works offer a powerful reflection on how we navigate our roles within society.
Relationships with Earth: The enigmatic but deleterious connection between society and the natural world takes center stage in the works of Kate Aitchison and Halee Roth. The relationship between ourselves and the earth mirrors the internal struggle between who we are and who we wish to be. It is a connection that is both necessary and inevitable, yet fraught with tension and contradiction. Aitchison’s solo exhibition delves deeply into the tension between the resilience and fragility of the earth, evoking a sense of urgency and reverence. Her pieces serve as a poignant reminder of our responsibility to protect and restore the landscapes that sustain us, inviting viewers to reflect on the emotional weight of our environmental impact.
In Experience...Process...Discover, Roth’s abstract ink art complements this narrative by using nature as a mirror for self-reflection. Her work captures the raw beauty and power of natural forces, evoking a deep emotional response that highlights the interconnectedness of our inner lives with the world around us. Together, Aitchison and Roth’s works invite viewers to engage with the emotional depth of our relationship with the earth.
These exhibitions capture the complexity of human existence—our instinctive need to nurture and protect, contrasted with a relentless drive that can lead to destruction, or even self-destruction, if not tempered with compassion and understanding.
